HISTORY OF LADAKH POLICE

The history of Ladakh police dates back to the pre independence era when the police was known as levy police . It is said that there were total of around 06 police constables in District Ladakh who were under the command of the senior most police officer known as Kotwal, a head constable rank officer who in turn happened to be under the supervision of the Naib Tehsildar, also known as Thaanedaar, having the powers of SHO.The Kotwal and constables didn’t wear any uniform but they wore a belt u with “Constable Police “ written on the buckle in Urdu language. After independence, in the year 1952 , Sh M.M Wazir a kashmir police service (KPS) officer was posted as first SP of Leh district . Those times, the District Police office was located the present municipal park in main market and with this police station leh also started functioning. After the bifurcation of Ladakh and formation of District leh and Kargil in 1979, Sh MK Mohanty (IPS) was posted as first SP of District leh. Ladakh police has been part of Jammu Kashmir Police till the bifurcation erst while Jammu kashmir state into State of Jammu kashmir and Union territory of Ladakh on 05 October 2019. On 11 August 2020 Ladakh Police formally adopted its own flag, formation sign.
