Ladakh Police today stands as a modern, responsive, and community-oriented force, rooted in a legacy that dates back to the pre-independence era when policing in the region began with a small group known as the Levy Police. What once operated with just six constables under a Kotwal, without uniforms but with belts marked “Constable Police” in Urdu, has evolved into a fully structured law enforcement agency committed to maintaining peace, justice, and public service across the Union Territory. With its dual headquarters in Leh and Kargil, the force now operates specialized units including Traffic, CID, Cyber Crime, and Anti-Narcotics, while also expanding citizen-centric services such as online complaint systems, e-challans, and dedicated women’s safety cells. Embracing technology, transparency, and professionalism, Ladakh Police continues to grow in strength and structure, upholding its core values of integrity, service, and courage in one of the most challenging terrains in the country. For decades, Ladakh Police functioned as part of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, but a new chapter began with the creation of the Union Territory of Ladakh on 5 October 2019. Since then, Ladakh Police has emerged as an independent force, steadily building its own identity and institutional strength.
